Last week in telecoms: Sky's takeover, Dutch open cable regulation and Italy's 5G auction moving ahead, while Intelsat's YTD gain reaches 800%

(Telecompaper) With the auction of Sky ending a long takeover battle, a spectrum auction in Italy going into overdrive and potentially explosive regulatory news from the Netherlands the European telecoms sector proved to be anything but dull. Share price performance in week 39 ranged between -8 percent and +35 percent. Our index lost 0.5 percent, performing slightly better than the EuroStoxx 50 index at -0.9 percent. Intelsat extended its year-to-date gain to no less than 800 percent.

Dutch regulator confirms regulation to open up Ziggo cable network to competition

(Telecompaper) The Dutch regulator ACM has confirmed regulation opening up VodafoneZiggo's network to competitors will take effect from 01 October. The final decision on wholesale fixed access, also covering access to KPN's fibre and copper networks, incorporates the earlier comments from the European Commission in August.

Swiss parliament rejects new wholesale access regulation for Swisscom

(Telecompaper) The Swiss parliament has rejected a proposal to subject Swisscom to additional wholesale regulation opening up its network to competitors. Despite support from the government minister and regulator, the MPs voted against the measure to expand regulation beyond the copper network to include virtual unbundling and fibre, ATS reported.

(Telecompaper) Last week showed that the telecoms sector has one drawback that distinguishes it from many other industries: intense regulation. While the high entry barriers are the flipside to this, regulation may scare off investors from time to time. The general market was down 1.0 percent in week 35 and the telecoms sector lost 2.0 percent, as measured by the EuroStoxx 50 index and our European telecoms index, respectively, amid news on regulation and new market entrants.
