HPE to spin off IT services arm in joint venture with CSC

(Telecompaper) HP Enterprise has announced plans to spin off its IT services business in a joint venture with CSC. In the latest step in the company's transformation, CEO Meg Whitman said the group will focus going forward on its networking equipment and infrastructure business. The spin-off, expected to be completed by next March, will see HPE shareholders receive shares equal to 50 percent of the new company. The merged group will have annual revenues of around USD 26 billion and continue to serve HP#s existing customers. Mike Lawrie, the current head of CSC, will become CEO of the new company, and Whitman will join the Board of Directors. The new company's board will be split 50/50 between directors nominated by HPE and CSC. Mike Nefkens, the current EVP and GM of HPE's Enterprise Services business, will join the new company's executive team.

ARM and TSMC announced a significant step forward for 10nm manufacturing yesterday, with news of a 10nm test device. Full-scale 10nm production, however, is still at least a year away -- and the early feedback from TSMC suggests this may be a short-lived node.
ARM acquires UK imaging firm Apical for USD 350 mln

(Telecompaper) Chipmaker ARM has announced the acquisition of UK imaging products company Apical for USD 350 million in cash. ARM described Apical as one of the UK's fastest-growing technology companies, whose advanced imaging products are currently used in more than 1.5 billion smartphones and around 300 million other consumer electronics devices, digital cameras and tablets. The acquisition is intended to support ARM's long-term growth strategy by enabling new imaging products for next generation vehicles, security systems, robotics, mobile and any consumer, smart building, industrial or retail application where intelligent image processing is needed.
