The U.S. Supreme Court sided with the EEOC today and clarified the standard for religious accommodation and disparate-treatment claims under Title VII. The Court ruled that an applicant can advance a disparate-treatment claim by showing that an employer's belief that she needed a religious accommodation was a motivating factor in the employer's decision against hiring her.

The Dow Chemical Company , 2015 WL 2147979, the Supreme Court of Texas affirmed the overturning of a jury verdict against Dow, finding it owed no duty related to the plaintiffs' claims that their decedent's asbestos-related disease was caused by his exposure to asbestos on Dow's property.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case filed by retirees of Verizon Communications Inc., New York, claiming they and other employees were involuntarily switched from Verizon's pension fund to a spinoff company. The ERISA class action, originally filed in a U.S. District Court in Dallas in November 2009, charged that they were switched without their knowledge or consent to a pension fund run by Dallas-based Idearc Inc., a Verizon spinoff company that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 2006.
Supreme Court Rules for Muslim Woman Denied Job at Clothing Store

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ruled in favor of a Muslim woman who filed a lawsuit after she was denied a job at an Abercrombie & Fitch Co clothing store in Oklahoma because she wore a head scarf for religious reasons. On a 8-1 vote, the court handed a win to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission , a federal agency that sued the company on behalf of Samantha Elauf.
