Times-Picayune: The BP oil disaster cost the Gulf of Mexico's commercial fishing industry $94.7 million to $1.6 billion and anywhere from 740 to 9,315 jobs in the first eight months, according to a new study by the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. The $355,888 study measured the effect of the Macondo well blowout from May through December 2010, the same period of time that is being used to calculate claims being paid to fishers under a 2012 court-approved settlement agreement between private parties and BP....

WhatsApp up to 100 million voice calls a day

(Telecompaper) Users of the messaging service WhatsApp are already making over 100 million voice calls every day just over a year since the feature finished rolling out to Android and iOS users. In a brief blog post, WhatsApp said the figure was equivalent to 1,100 calls a second and that it was committed to making the feature even better for its 1 billion users in the months to come. WhatsApp started full end-to-end encryption across its messaging app last April and some websites such as FoneArena reported that the company has started testing a video calling feature.

US giving $48 million to help Western farms handle drought

Associated Press: The Obama administration is announcing $48 million in grants to help farmers and ranchers in the West conserve water and energy amid drought and climate change. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is scheduled to discuss the plan Thursday in Colorado. The Agriculture Department says the effort will include 76 projects in at least 11 states. The department says the program will include improving irrigation systems. The grants will come from both the Agriculture and Interior departments.
