Secondhand smoke: Nations producing less greenhouse gas most vulnerable to climate change

2016-02-05 11:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

PhysOrg: The study shows that the highest emitting countries are ironically the least vulnerable to climate change effects such as increased frequency of natural disasters, changing habitats, human health impacts, and industry stress. Those countries emitting the least amount of greenhouse gases are most vulnerable. The majority of the most vulnerable countries are African and Small Island States. These countries are exposed to serious environmental change such as oceanic inundation or desertification....

Bill would help state meet greenhouse gas emissions goals

2016-01-30 13:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Associated Press: A bill approved by the Massachusetts Senate would set new targets to help the state meet its greenhouse gas emissions goals. The new targets would help the state meet its existing 2050 statewide greenhouse gas emissions goals set by the Global Warming Solutions Act. The bill sets an emissions limit of between 35 and 45 percent below the 1990 emissions level by 2030. The bill then sets another emissions limit of between 55 and 65 percent below the 1990 emissions level by 2040. The bill would also...

Soil frost affects greenhouse gas emissions in the Arctic

2016-01-17 00:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: Soil frost is a nearly universal process in the Arctic. In a recent dissertation by doctoral student Marina Becher at Ume University, it is shown that the frequency and extent of soil frost is important for the release of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from arctic soil. Soil in the Arctic has for thousands of years gathered large quantities of decomposed organic matter due to the decomposition being slow at the low temperatures in the region. As temperatures in the Arctic are increasing, there...

Researchers work on lowering greenhouse gas emissions from poultry houses

2016-01-12 22:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: The University of Delaware's Hong Li is part of a research team looking at how adding alum as an amendment to poultry litter reduces ammonia and greenhouse gas concentrations and emissions, specifically carbon dioxide, in poultry houses. Li partnered with researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the University of Tennessee and Oklahoma State University for the project and the results of the research were recently published in the Journal of Environmental Quality. Li, assistant...
