Telefonica launches 'The Thinx' project as IoT sales surge 30%

(Telecompaper) Telefonica has announced the launch of an Internet of Things (IoT) focused initiative called The Thinx, described as an open ecosystem for the development of IoT products and services via technologies such as Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) and LTE-M. The project's labs are designed to enable customers to test and integrate new applications and devices under real network conditions in a collaborative space. Telefonica has already launched The Thinx laboratories in Chile and Rio de Janeiro, with a Madrid lab to be inaugurated this week ahead of new openings in London, Berlin and Buenos Aires.

Telefonica maintains growth outlook after Q3 sales fall 2.5%

(Telecompaper) Telefonica reported third-quarter revenues down 2.5 percent from a year earlier to EUR 12.754 billion. On an organic basis, revenues rose 4 percent, or 5.3 percent when excluding regulatory effects such as the end to EU roaming rates. Growth in service revenues improved to 3.3 percent year-on-year in organic terms, helped by the return to growth in Spain.

Telefonica Colombia confirms EUR 1.8 bln capital hike, pays EUR 472 mln fine

(Telecompaper) Telefonica announced that it has come to an agreement with the Colombian government to increase the capital of its subsidiary Colombia Telecomunicaciones (Coltel) by around EUR 1.37 billion to pay debt owed to asset management fund Parapat. The company said its capital injection into ColTel will amount to around EUR 925 million and will fully settle its obligations with Parapat, the consortium that owns the telecommunications assets and manages the pension funds of the former companies that resulted in Coltel. Telefonica and the Colombian government also announced a further EUR 472 million capital increase in proportion to their respective stakes to comply with a Colombian arbitration fine for breaching a government contract for mobile services.
