Telefonica launches O2 brand in Spain

(Telecompaper) Telefonica has presented the commercial details of its new O2 brand, targeting Spain's low-cost segment and above all rival Masmovil with a simple mobile only and convergent (fibre plus mobile) offering. The mobile plan comes with 20GB of data plus unlimited national calls and SMS for EUR 20 a month while the convergent offer includes the same mobile service plus symmetric fibre broadband at 100Mbps and a landline with unlimited national calls for EUR 45 a month. Customers can also include up to three additional mobile lines with 10GB of data, unlimited calls and SMS for EUR 15 each. The O2 service will be activated in "beta mode" in the coming days ahead of a mass market launch "after the summer", said Telefonica.

Telefonica, Netflix ink global content integration deal

(Telecompaper) Telefonica has announced a multi-year agreement to integrate Netflix into its entire TV and video portfolio across Europe and Latin America. In a statement, the operator said Netflix content will be added to its Movistar+ pay-TV and OTT platform in Latin America in the next few weeks, while the launch in Spain is planned for the end of this year. Without disclosing any pricing details, Telefonica revealed that the Netflix app will be integrated into pay-TV set-top boxes and provide access to Netflix from the Movistar Play Video OTT service, enabling members to pay their Netflix subscription via their Telefonica bill.

Telefonica to use O2 as brand name for low-cost offering - report

(Telecompaper) Telefonica has finally opted to use O2 as the brand name for the low-cost Spanish MVNO offering it's preparing to counter the rise of rival Masmovil, reports Europa Press. The O2 brand is currently used by Telefonica's UK and German operations and will join the company's two other Spanish commercial brands, Movistar and Tuenti. Previous reports indicated that the low-cost brand will be headed by Pedro Serrahima, the newly-recruited founder and former CEO of Spanish MVNO Pepephone, and will begin operations after the summer.

Telefonica posts 1.9% organic revenue growth in Q1, service revenue up 0.8%

(Telecompaper) Telefonica reported a drop in first-quarter results, hurt by negative currency effects, while organic growth remained positive. Revenues fell 7.1 percent to EUR 12.19 billion, but were up 1.9 percent on an organic basis, led by strengthening growth in Spain and Brazil. Service revenues increased 0.8 percent and handset revenue rose 16.5 percent.
