Another Fukushima Leak Likely Sends More Contaminated Water into Ocean

2013-10-03 23:33:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Nature World: Another leak of radioactive water at the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear campus was reported Thursday, and some of the water may have have reached the plant's harbor on the Pacific Ocean. The water, which leaked out of a holding tank, contained 200,000 becquerels per liter of beta-emitting radioactive isotopes, including strontium 90. Levels of strontium 90 were found to be 6,667 times the legal limit, which is 30 becquerels per liter. Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant's operator, said...

Effect of climate change sends ocean health 'spiralling downward' faster than predicted

2013-10-03 12:48:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Independent: Scientists have warned that climate change has sent the health of oceans "spiralling downward" faster than previously thought. A key international assessment of climate change last week revealed the oceans are absorbing much of the warming and unprecedented levels of carbon dioxide caused by human activity such as burning fossil fuels. Now experts are warning the impact of rising greenhouse gases combined with a range of other problems is far graver than previously thought. Oceans are being...

Ocean acidification due to carbon emissions is at highest for 300m years

2013-10-03 07:16:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: The oceans are more acidic now than they have been for at least 300m years, due to carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels, and a mass extinction of key species may already be almost inevitable as a result, leading marine scientists warned on Thursday. An international audit of the health of the oceans has found that overfishing and pollution are also contributing to the crisis, in a deadly combination of destructive forces that are imperilling marine life, on which billions of people...

Landslide Opposition to LNG Port and Industrialization of the Ocean

2013-10-02 18:52:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

EcoWatch: Overall, out of a sea of over 25,350 comments submitted to the Liberty Liquified Natural Gas (LNG)--Port Ambrose docket, only 16 comments supported industrialization of the ocean. This broad opposition to Liberty LNGs Port Ambrose came from concerned citizens across the U.S. whose input was solicited by the Maritime Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard as part of the federal governments project review process. Since the close of the public comment period on Aug. 22, Clean Ocean Action has...
