Dealers that are selling alternative fuel vehicles pure electric, plug in hybrid, hybrid, natural gas vehicle, flex fuel, and other variations know very well that education is a must for staff to deliver to car shoppers and owners. There are always questions that come up about incentives, charging and fueling stations, lifecycle ownership costs, and other green benefits of ownership. Two experts gave presentations on these issues last week at the NAFA conference in Atlantic City, NJ, that are excellent for dealer management to know about. Mark Smith of US Dept. of Energys Clean Cities, and by Terry Levinson of Energetics Inc., offered resources on issues and questions that come up all the time. They covered laws and incentives on these vehicles, charging and fueling station locations, ways to reduce petroleum consumption, and how to reduce fuel guzzling idle time. When Hurricane Sandy decimated a large portion of the East Coast last year, companies and their data centers wound up without electricity for days or, in some cases, even weeks. The consequences of that and other recent severe storms are spurring some companies to plug into natural gas pipelines to fuel their electricity needs while others look to become completely energy independent -- even going as far as collecting rain to supply their water needs.
