Last week in telecoms: bonds deals for Digital Realty, Altice Europe, Cellnex and a look back at 2019

2020-01-14 21:30:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) It has been quiet so far on the telecoms front in 2020. A number of companies turned to the debt markets, but not much else happened. We use the opportunity to take a closer look back at 2019. It has generally been a terrific year for equity investors, with the S&P 500 index up 24.8 percent for the year. Alas, not so for telecoms investors in Europe. The Telecompaper European Telecoms Services index was up just 7.5 percent, seriously trailing the S&P 500. However, for infrastructure operators 2019 was a year of rerating.

Last week in media: a soft start to 2020 and nearly matching the S&P 500 in 2019

2020-01-14 11:41:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The media sector has been relatively quiet in 2020, so far. Time for a look back at 2019. The sector, as per the Telecompaper Global Media index, did almost as well as the S&P 500 index. The absolute winner in our basket was Snap, up almost threefold. McClatchy was the worst stock to own in 2019, down 94 percent. Further, in most segments performances diverged widely. Gaming, social networking, VOD and conglomerates were exceptions, with most shares in those segments doing (very) well last year. The theatre segment stayed behind.
