Gov. Rick Snyder today signed tax-reform legislation designed to attract the largest data center in the eastern United States to an empty building outside Grand Rapids. Switch, a Nevada-based company that wants to use the old Steelcase "pyramid" building as the hub for a new 2 million-square-foot campus, will be exempt - along with other data centers - from sales and use taxes on equipment like computers, servers and cabling through 2035, if the industry meets collective job-creation goals.

A fast-tracked plan to land a high-tech data center in West Michigan has slowed this week in the state House, as officials debate the nuts and bolts of a major tax break proposal still likely to be finalized by the end of the year. But with just four session days left on the legislative calendar in 2015, there remain "tough questions that need to be answered before I sign off on something," Gov. Rick Snyder said Wednesday.

Mass transit is getting a holiday security boost courtesy of police officers from New Jersey and New York, Gov. Cuomo announced Tuesday. Cuomo signed an executive order granting New Jersey and Connecticut law enforcement agencies the power to patrol transit facilities and trains operating in New York.
