Position Reference 912 On behalf of ESA, we are currently looking for a Mechanisms Engineer to work in its Site ESTEC in the city of Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Mechanisms support to all ESA project directorates with respect to the implementation of space mechanism technologies in current and future missions, including configuration assessments and mission performance evaluation. Establishment of Statement of Work and Preliminary Requirement Specifications for Mechanism Systems, Individual Mechanisms or Mechanism components dedicated to Technology and Research Development. Perform and support in the role of Mechanism engineer, System Level Mission Definition studies and system conceptual design activities in support of the ESA long termfuture mission plans. Identification of enabling mechanism and tribological technologies for future ESA missions. Support investigations of mechanisms being out of performance, including malfunctions and contingency scenarios. Support and contribute to the establishment and maintenance of the Space Mechanisms ECSS Engineering Standards. Generation and setup of appropriate space mechanisms analysis and simulation models using analysis tools based on technical documentation of space mechanisms. Back up and archiving of analysis models for later retrieval. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory Masters degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, with at least 4 years of relevant working experience. Relevant experience within the field of mechanism design, analysis, verification and testing. Excellent knowledge in space system engineering, specializing in mechanisms. Knowledge of the Space Mechanism ECSS standard and its application to the design and verification of mechanisms. Good knowledge of space mechanism testing and verification methodologies and techniques. Good knowledge of related mechanisms numerical analysis tools such as Adams, VirtualLab Motion, SIMPACK, MatlabSimulink, Maxwell, Flux etc. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work effectively, autonomously and cooperatively in a diverse and international team environment, defining and implementing solutions in line with team and individual objectives, as well as project deadlines. Fluency in English, both written and spoken. The following skills would be highly desirable At least 10 years of experience in Space mechanisms development. Robust Mechanism Designs which meet project requirements with minimal need for iteration or rework at late stages. Quality of documentation. Experience and Skills An Engineer with several years experience in the space industry, with an interest to develop as a mechanisms Architect. The following is necessary for the role Experience as a Mechanical Engineer in a multidisciplinary team. Experience of Mechanical design, including 3D CAD generation of parts and assemblies from conception to final review. Experience of 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings. Good knowledge of materials and their properties. Experience of design calculations or analysis using FEA methods to size and justify Mechanical designs. Knowledge of the space environment and how it impacts on Mechanical design. Experienceknowledge of manufacturing techniques for prototyping and also production conventional and advanced and how these affect the design. The following would be an asset Experience of Mechanism design and development. Vibration or Thermalvacuum testing. Experienceknowledge of typicallyused parts and materials including actuators, bearings, lubricants, flexible couplings harnesses and hoses, thermal protection, position sensors, launch lock devices, metals, composites, coatings as well as the industry suppliers for these. Education Qualifications The following is necessary for the role A recent Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University with a minimum 21 or equivalent. We are looking for a Mechanisms Engineer to be based at Airbus Defence Space Limited in Stevenage. As a Mechanisms Engineer your role will involve the detailed design, development and verification of high reliability, complex space mechanisms with a focus on motor development for both telecoms spacecraft and science missions. You will join a team of 12 highly experienced engineers who are all knowledgeable and passionate about space mechanisms. As a Mechanisms Engineer you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of motor development projects, current and future, working alongside different department experts from whom you will gain engineering knowledge in a diverse technical environment including thermal, stress, materials, environmental testing and quality, while also gaining a comprehensive working knowledge of complex space mechanisms and tribology. The successful candidate will be subject to security clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs.
