Reuters: Australia's government has reached a compromise with independent senators and a key opposition party to secure support for a A$2.5 billion ($2.2 billion) fund to cut greenhouse gas emissions, Environment Minister Greg Hunt said Wednesday. The ruling Liberal party has secured backing from the Palmer United Party (PUP) and independent senators Nick Xenophon and John Madigan on a contentious policy issue that brought down the country's two previous prime ministers. "This is a tremendous outcome...

EU emissions target isn't as ambitious as it seems
2014-10-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New Scientist: It sounds bold and ambitious. European Union leaders last night signed off on an agreement to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 40 per cent by 2030. But climate scientists are wary of applauding the plan. For one thing, the target is a cut of 40 per cent compared with greenhouse gas emissions in 1990 - nearly 25 years ago. Since then, the EU has made cuts of almost 20 per cent, mainly through burning less coal and outsourcing heavy industries to developing countries. So it is virtually halfway there...

'It's a good start': EU leaders strike deal on carbon emissions
2014-10-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Australian Broadcasting Corporation: MARK COLVIN: Climate advocates aren't all that happy but they concede it's a good start. European Union leaders have struck a deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2030. It's what's being described as an opening gambit, as countries reveal their emissions pledges ahead of critical climate talks in Paris next year. The Labor government committed Australia to cutting emissions by 5 per cent by 2020 - a commitment the Abbott Government promised on this program to keep straight...
Despite California climate law, carbon emissions may be a shell game
2014-10-25 13:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
LA Times: California's pioneering climate-change law has a long reach, but that doesn't mean all its mandates will help stave off global warming. To meet the requirement that it cut carbon emissions, for example, Southern California Edison recently sold its stake in one of the West's largest coal-fired power plants, located hundreds of miles out of state. But the Four Corners Generating Station in New Mexico still burns coal only the power that Edison once delivered to California now goes to a different...

Emissions Link for Billions of Climate Aid Stalls UN Talks
2014-10-25 07:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: A dispute about how to link greenhouse-gas emissions cuts to a promise from the wealthiest nations for $100 billion a year in climate aid emerged as a major stumbling block at UN talks on global warming. After a week of discussions that ended today in Bonn, envoys from some 190 nations were deadlocked about the formula countries will use to set out their commitments on reducing fossil-fuel pollution in time for the deal they plan to sign in Paris in 2015. That means higher-level officials will...
