Restoring wetlands can lessen soil sinkage, greenhouse gas emissions, study finds

ScienceDaily: The study, which is one of the first to continually measure the fluctuations of both carbon and methane as they cycle through wetlands, appears in the journal by Global Change Biology. Worldwide, agricultural drainage of organic soils has resulted in vast soil subsidence and contributed to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. The California Delta was drained more than a century ago for agriculture and human settlement and has since experienced subsidence rates that are among the...
Brazil: Rio 2016 says will offset 3.6 mln tonnes of emissions at Games

Reuters: The Rio 2016 local organizing committee set a target on Thursday to offset the total amount of greenhouse gases estimated to be produced by the world's largest multi-sport event. The Olympic Games are expected to generate 3.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), mostly due to traveling and accommodation of spectators, the local organizing committee (LOC) said. That number is slightly larger than what was released by the London 2012 Games, at around 3.4 million tonnes of CO2e....
Methane emissions may swell from behind dams

Climate Central: Imagine nearly 6,000 dairy cows doing what cows do, belching and being flatulent for a full year. That's how much methane was emitted from one Ohio reservoir in 2012. Reservoirs and hydropower are often thought of as climate friendly because they don't burn fossil fuels to produce electricity. But what if reservoirs that store water and produce electricity were among some of the world's largest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions? Harsha Lake, a large reservoir near Cincinnati, Ohio, emitted...

EU set to overachieve 2020 carbon emissions goal
2014-10-29 10:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
RTCC: The EU is on track to overachieve on its climate targets for 2020, according to the European Environment Agency. New greenhouse gas data shows emissions fell 1.8% between 2012 and 2013, leaving the bloc just 1% off its goal to cut emissions 20% on 1990 levels by 2020. The EEA says member states could make overall cuts of 24% on 1990 levels by the end of the decade, if additional measures such as carbon market reform and new energy efficiency rules are adopted. Based on existing policies,...
