Android Creator Launches a Phone of His Own

Essential, a company founded by Andy Rubin, the "father of Android," on Tuesday pulled off the wraps on a new high-end smartphone. The Essential Phone, priced at $699, includes radios for connecting to all major U.S. carriers. The unit has an almost edge-to-edge display -- there's a bit of bezel at the bottom of its screen -- that wraps around the 8-MP selfie camera at the front.

ZTE launches Project CSX to crowdsource mobile phone idea

(Telecompaper) ZTE USA launched Project CSX, a platform whose aim is to crowdsource the next big idea for a mobile device the company will release in 2017. ZTE's member-led forum, Z-Community, will serve as the platform for ideation and feedback throughout the entire development process. To join Z-Community, ideas can be submitted at community.zteusa.com. Small cash prizes will be awarded to those who submit winning ideas and make popular submissions throughout the process. They also get the chance to win a trip to the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas.

Jolla partners Mifone, launches first phone with Intex

(Telecompaper) Jolla has announced a new partnership to develop its Sailfish mobile operating system with the African phonemaker Mifone. At Mobile World Congress, Jolla and India-based Intex Technologies also unveiled the new Aqua Fish smartphone powered by Sailfish OS. This is the first device running on a licensed Sailfish OS, part of Jolla's new strategy to expand beyond making its own hardware and build partnerships in the BRICS countries. Sales of the Intex phone will start by the end of April. With Mi-Fone, Jolla expects to launch a phone running Sailfish OS in several African markets in Q2.

Huawei launches first Honor phone, smartband in US

(Telecompaper) Huawei has confirmed the launch of its Honor 5X smartphone in the US, the first of its online-only brand Honor to reach the country. Targeting "internet-minded millennials", the Honor 5X features a metal body available in a choice of gold, silver or grey finishes. It will go on sale 31 January on Amazon.com, Newegg.com and HiHonor.com/us at USD 199.99. Inspired by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, the Honor 5X's aluminum alloy body has a curved back with a fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone, as well as other gesture controls such as making a call or launching an app during locked mode, taking photos, pulling down and hiding the notification bar as well as canceling an alarm. It comes with a 13MP back camera and 5MP front camera. Other features include a 5.5-inch, 10-point multi-touch Full-HD IPS display, 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of memory, 3,000 mAh battery and microSD card slot. Honor is also launching the Z1 smartband, a lightweight, water-resistant wearable with health, sports and fitness tracking capabilities. The band and will be available on HiHonor.com/us starting 31 January at USD 79.99.

ZTE Launches Flagship Axon Phone, Axon Watch and Spro 2 Smart Projector in China

ZTE, a leading global mobile device maker, today launched its flagship Axon phone for the China market at the Water Cube in Beijing. Together with this announcement came the unveiling of a brand new wearable called the Axon Watch, as well as the China debut of the Spro 2 smart projector.
