Vodafone UK launches home broadband, phone services

(Telecompaper) Vodafone UK has announced the launch of Vodafone Connect to provide broadband and home phone services to customers. Vodafone is investing significantly in the programme, which will create more than 400 new jobs in the South East of England and Glasgow. Vodafone's nationwide, fibre optic, business-grade network is available at speeds up to 76 Mbps and reaches exchanges which pass almost 20 million premises across the UK. This figure is set to reach around 22 million later in summer 2015. The service will be offered with the plug-and-play Vodafone Connect router and the Vodafone Connect companion mobile app. Customers can choose from Ultrafast Fibre Broadband (up to 76 Mbps), Superfast Fibre Broadband (up to 38 Mbps) or Broadband ADSL (up to 17 Mbps).

Thuraya launches XT-Pro satellite phone

(Telecompaper) Thuraya has launched a new satellite phone, the Thuraya XT-Pro, which will be available at all Thuraya service partners from 30 April. Targeted at professional users across a range of market sectors including government, energy, media and NGOs, the Thuraya XT-Pro features built-in GPS, BeiDou and Glonass for high accuracy navigation and added security in every region. The phone offers a talk-time of up to 9 hours, which Thuraya claims is the longest on any satellite phone. It is jet-water, dust and shock resistant and comes with a Gorilla Glass display with glare resistance. The Thuraya XT-Pro also has a dedicated SOS button with advanced navigation and tracking features for added safety. The XT-Pro can be used across the Thuraya network covering two-thirds of the globe, including more than 160 countries. The phone can be used either with a Thuraya prepaid or postpaid SIM card, or a SIM card from any of Thuraya's worldwide GSM roaming partners.

Amazon cuts Fire phone to 99 cents, launches in Germany, UK

(Telecompaper) Amazon has announced it is now offering the Amazon Fire phone for USD 0.99 with a two-year contract. Customers can purchase Fire on www.amazon.com and from AT&T in the US. The smartphone was first launched in June for USD 199 for 32 GB storage or USD 299 with 64 GB. Amazon also announced its first agreement to offer the phone outside the US, with Deutsche Telekom in Germany and O2 UK. The German operator is offering the phone for EUR 1 with certain plans, such as Magenta M for EUR 49.95 per month, and O2 customers can get the phone with plans starting at GBP 33 per month. Until the end of the year, customers buying the phone will also get a one-year free subscription to Amazon Prime. The operators have already started pre-sales, and the phone will be available in stores 30 September.

Intex launches first Firefox phone in India

(Telecompaper) Mozilla has brought its Firefox mobile operating system to India with the launch of the Cloud FX smartphone by Intex Technologies. The phone will be available exclusively on the site Snapdeal.com in a choice of black or white for INR 1,999. The Intex Cloud FX is equipped with Firefox OS, a 1.0 GHz processor and expandable memory of up to 4GB. It features dual-SIM capabilities, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for connectivity, and built-in functionality for users to monitor and control their data usage. Several languages are supported on the phone, including Hindi and Tamil. This is the first Firefox available in Asia.
