Smithfield Foods Inc. said its fourth-quarter earnings surged as the pork processor continued to benefit from strong demand for bacon and other packaged meats products. The largest hog producer and pork processor in the U.S. has been spending more heavily in its packaged-food business, where products have higher margins than sales of raw pork to grocers or restaurants.
