A Lake Oswego real-estate agent who investigators say tried to cut corners -- by hiring untrained day laborers to remove asbestos from a trendy Southeast Portland house that he was flipping -- pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor crime. William Gaffney had no previous criminal history, but state investigators say his actions in March 2014 moved into the criminal realm when he failed to hire a trained asbestos-abatement company to gut the 1908 Craftsman-style home, just steps from hip Hawthorne Boulevard.

Pastor and car dealer convicted after conducting $1.1m cash transaction

A Westmoreland pastor and a car dealer accused of conducting a $1.1 million cash transaction have been convicted of breaches of the Proceeds of Crime Act . The pastor and his co accused 60-year-old Oswald Spence, businessman of Claude Clarke Avenue in St James and owner of a car dealership in Montego Bay, St James are to be sentenced on November 30. The pastor, who heads a congregation on Cooke Street, Savanna-la-Mar and his co accused were arrested and charged with breaches under the Proceeds of Crime Act on September 18 and September 23 respectively.

Former Chinese state oil boss convicted of corruption

Chinese state media say a top official who led the country's biggest petroleum company and later was assigned to oversee state-owned firms has been convicted of corruption and sentenced to 16 years in prison. State broadcaster CCTV said Jiang Jiemin, former chairman of the state-run China National Petroleum Corp., told the court that he would not appeal Monday's verdict.
