SW PROFESSIONAL GEODATA Position Within the unit Earth Observation we are looking for a software professional for the design of geodata solutions data distribution, ondemand image processing on large and scalable platforms, Big Data analytics to retrieve information from satellite and airborne UAV data which have grown into the petabyte range. You will design, implement and test solutions in which you also integrate existing components from VITO and 3rdparties. We use preferentially opensource software. Your job will cover architecture work, software development and responsibilities for operational systems. You will be responsible, together with you colleagues in the team, for continuously spotting and adopting new technologies in distributed processing or large scale database systems in research projects and bring these into an operational environment to realize valueadding services with clear SLAs. You will execute technical tasks, but in the future you might get as well responsibilities in project management and deliver support to business development. You will work in research projects as well as addedvalue service programs in an international environment with customers as the European Space Agency ESA, the European Commission EC and several leading international research groups on Earth Observation. Profile Master degree or PhD with a strong expertise in Computer Science and experience in Linux. Very good programming skills in Java. Experience with Python, R, C, is considered an asset. Experience in Geographical Information Systems or OGC standards will be positively considered, but is no requirement. Experience in data visualization in Web based applications built with state of the art HTML5 and JavaScript technologies is considered an asset. Able to swiftly discover, prototype and evaluate new emerging technologies in new research fields such as Hadoop and Spark, openStack, data science, machine learning, etc. Being openminded, team and solution oriented, manage several tasks at once and prioritize accordingly. Able to communicate orally and in writing effectively in English for reporting in project meetings with customers and contributing to proposals on IT subjects.
