Warmer winters play important role in EU emissions drop

2016-06-22 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Significantly warmer winters have played an important role in the ongoing decline in EU greenhouse gas emissions. According to a new report, the use of CO2 and other gases across the bloc dropped by almost a quarter between 1990 and 2014. A switch from coal to natural gas, the recession and the rise of renewable energy all contributed to the fall. The latest figures, from 2014, show that a milder winter was the major factor in the reduction that year. Overall from 1990 to 2014 emissions...

Death of coral reefs blamed on overfishing, pollution and warmer ocean

2016-06-08 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Houston Chronicle: An undated handout photo received on May 30, 2016, shows dying coral colonised by seaweed at Lizard Island during the current bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef. At least 35 percent of corals in the northern and central regions of Australia's Great Barrier Reef are dead or dying from a mass bleaching event, scientists said on May 30, 2016. The assessment was made after months of aerial and underwater surveys after the worst bleaching in recorded history first became evident in March as sea...

How fish adapt to warmer waters but not to extremes

2016-05-24 13:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Environmental News Network: Fish can adjust to warmer ocean temperatures, but heat waves can still kill them, a team of researchers from Sweden, Norway and Australia reports in an article published this week in Nature Communications. "A species might adapt and grow well (in warmer waters) but once you get strong heat spells, the water temperature might reach lethal temperatures and kill them," said Fredrik Jutfelt, an associate professor in biology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology who was senior author...

Warmer Winters Will Mean Catastrophic Effects For The Environment And Human Life

2016-03-19 08:52:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ClimateProgress: For many, the winters we remember from childhood are becoming just that: memories. Winters record warmth in recent years - especially the shockingly high temperatures during the first months of 2016 - has become a frightening harbinger of a world to come. Along with shorter and warmer winters, many areas also are experiencing earlier-than-normal springs, or "false springs, and sporadic hot summer-like days, a climate pattern that can produce chaos with the Earths ecosystems. "In the more...
