A week-old squabble between two Dutch groups -- the spamfighting Spamhaus Project and Web hosting service Cyberbunker -- has resulted in what has been called the largest distributed denial of service attack in Web history. The cyberfight reportedly has spilled over onto the global Internet and slowed down some data communications, especially in Europe.

This research brief is an update of an earlier brief (graph based) on the development of mobile promotions by retailers in the Netherlands for the quarter periods Q2 2011 to Q4 2012. Information is based on findings from Telecompaper's Mobile Promotions Database, which tracks active promotions of mobile services on a weekly basis. Main findings: With the dissapearance of t for telecom as a retail chain, the combined share of the three largest retailers (Phone House, BelCompany, Telecombinatie) has remained stable at 45 percent of all promotions in Q4 2012 compared to same period last year. Independent retailer Phone House remains the largest and has a stable share of 29 percent.

Main finding: Samsung remained the most promoted handset brand in the Dutch mobile market and continued to increase its market share in the last seven quarters.

This research brief focuses on mobile promotions and mobile media spending by operator in the Netherlands. The info is shown over the past seven quarters and is based on findings from Telecompaper's Mobile Promotions Database and Mobile Media Spending Database. The first database tracks active promotions of mobile services on a weekly basis, while the Media Spending database monitors all above-the-line marketing activities of telecom providers (fixed and mobile), retailers, equipment makers, content providers. According to Telecompaper's promotions database, Vodafone remained the most promoted operator overall, although share is dropping over the past seven quarters. Concerning gross marketing spending, the overall spending was less on above the line (newspapers, TV, radio, magazine, outdoor) in Q4 2012 than in Q4 2011, especially at Vodafone and T-Mobile.
