Verizon on Thursday reported stronger retail postpaid net additions in the second quarter than AT&T, which also continued to lose video subscribers. Telefonica Deutschland slows sales drop, OIBDA accelerates in Q2

(Telecompaper) Telefonica Deutschland slowed its drop in revenues to 3.4 percent in the second quarter, for a total EUR 1.77 billion, while growth in adjusted EBITDA accelerated to 5 percent, to EUR 472 million. The OIBDA margin improved 2 percentage points to 26.7 percent, driven by cost savings. The company said it reduced costs by EUR 40 million in the quarter.

AT&T returns to profit growth in Q2

(Telecompaper) AT&T reported higher profits for the second quarter, as lower costs helped offset falling sales in its legacy fixed and consumer mobile activities. Revenues fell 1.8 percent to USD 39.8 billion, while operating profit improved to USD 7.3 billion from USD 6.6 billion a year ago, thanks to reductions in operating costs. The adjusted operating margin, which excludes merger-related costs and other one-time items, rose by 150 basis points year-on-year to 21.6 percent.

KPN posts higher EBITDA despite 2.7% fall in Q2 revenue

(Telecompaper) Dutch operator KPN reported revenues of EUR 1.63 billion for the second quarter, down 2.7 percent from a year earlier. EBITDA was still up 1.4 percent to EUR 587 million, better than expected and giving an adjusted margin of 41.0 percent. Capex fell 24 percent to EUR 238 million, helping operating cash flow (EBITDA minus capex) increase to EUR 363 million. Net profit improved to EUR 191 million from EUR 162 million a year earlier.

Smartphone sales leap 9% to 347 mln in strongest Q2 - GfK

(Telecompaper) Worldwide demand for smartphones reached 346.9 million in the second quarter from 333.7 million the year before (+9%), making it the strongest second quarter on record, according to the latest data from GfK. Sales were strongest in Emerging Asia, up 13 percent year-on-year, followed by Central and Eastern Europe with 11 percent, and Latin America with 10 percent. Sales returned to growth in the US, lifted slightly in Africa and were flat in China. They fell in Europe and in Developed Asia.
