Alliance partners Virgin Australia Holdings and Delta Air Lines have indicated they have no plans to add capacity between Australia and the mainland United States, in a move that will benefit Qantas Airways due to its position as the dominant carrier on the trans-Pacific route. Virgin and Delta, which have a combined 25 per cent market share on the route compared with Qantas at 54 per cent and United Airlines at 21 per cent, have applied to the competition regulator to renew their alliance for a further 10 years.

UK billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd posted its first annual profit since 2011 following a two-year revival plan underpinned by collaboration with US shareholder Delta Air Lines Incorporated. Pretax profit before one-time items was 14.4 million pounds in 2014, compared with a year-earlier loss of 51 million pounds, Crawley, England-based Virgin said today.

Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. eked out an operating profit last year as the airline founded by Richard Branson seeks to become more financially resilient through a partnership with Delta Air Lines. Virgin Atlantic said on Tuesday that it made a A 14.4 million profit before tax and one-time items in 2014 and ended a three-year period of losses.
