American, Southwest Airlines lead nation in airline profitability

U.S. passenger airlines reported a net profit of $7.5 billion in 2014, with two Texas-based carriers leading the way. The airline that now operates as Fort Worth-based American Airlines reported a net profit of $2.79 billion, and Dallas-based Southwest Airlines profit comprises $1.48 billion for US Airways and $1.31 billion for American.

The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported Monday that U.S. carriers as a group earned just under $7.5 billion in 2014. That was down $4.7 billion from 2013.

Mainland Chinese airlines outshine Cathay Pacific in stock market rally

Cheng Cathay Pacific Airways is being outshone by mainland Chinese airline stocks which are catching up with their A-share valuations, with China Southern Airlines having risen almost five times more than the Hang Seng Index since the middle of March.

Qatar Airways' plans to boost flights may rile U.S. airlines

Qatar Airways on Monday said it plans to expand its services to the United States, in a move that likely will trigger a backlash from U.S. airlines that accuse it of competing unfairly through state subsidies. The Gulf carrier announced its first direct flights to Los Angeles, Boston and Atlanta from its Doha hub and its second daily flight to New York.
