The National Institutes of Health awarded Integral Molecular Inc. a five-year, $3.5 million contract to study the human immune response to the Ebola virus and hepatitis C virus. The funding will enable the Philadelphia biotechnology company to better understand how human antibodies protect, or fail to protect, people against such viruses.

WASHINGTON - An American doctor who was exposed to the Ebola virus while volunteering in Sierra Leone was admitted Sunday to a hospital at the National Institutes of Health near the nation's capital. The patient, who was not identified, arrived at NIH's Clinical Center about 4 p.m., NIH said in a statement on its website.

Containers filled with several types of potentially deadly substances, including a nearly 100-year-old vial of the toxin ricin and samples of the pathogens that cause botulism and the plague , have reportedly been discovered at US National Institutes of Health and Food and Drug Administration laboratories. The substances were discovered as part of a search launched in response to the accidental discovery of smallpox at an NIH facility in Bethesda, Maryland earlier this summer, according to BBC News .

Workers searching government laboratories in the wake of the July discovery of smallpox have found six more improperly stored, dangerous pathogens - including ricin, the neurotoxin botulism and the bacteria that causes plague. On Friday, officials at the National Institutes of Health said the search on its sprawling Bethesda campus had turned up five different misplaced pathogens in recent weeks.
