FCC proposes satellite TV market modification rules
2015-03-26 20:32:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) The Federal Communications Commission proposed modifying satellite television market rules to enable satellite subscribers to gain access to in-state news and other programming that they currently are unable to receive. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking implements Section 1102 of the STELA Reauthorisation Act of 2014. The proposal would, as Congress directed, create regulatory parity between satellite and cable television providers.

Safe harbour rules do not protect citizens' data - EC lawyer
2015-03-26 19:24:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) A European Commission attorney has warned EU citizens that if they want to keep information private from US security services, they should close their Facebook accounts because current safe harbour legislation does not protect EU citizens' data, the Guardian reports. "You might consider closing your Facebook account, if you have one," said EC attorney Bernard Schima to attorney general Yves Bot in the hearing of a case brought by privacy campaigner Maximilian Schrems, who has sued Ireland at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for not blocking the sharing of his private data with US authorities. The European Commission could not confirm in court that safe harbour rules provide sufficient protection for citizens' data. An opinion on the safe harbour framework from the ECJ is expected by 24 June. Facebook would not comment on the matter.

First legal challeges filed against US net neutrality rules
2015-03-24 12:50:49| IT Services - Topix.net
US broadband trade body USTelecom and internet service provider Alamo Broadband have filed the first legal challenges to the Federal Communications Commission's recently approved net neutrality rules. The principle of net neutrality dictates data packets on the internet should be moved impartially, without regard to content, destination or source.
USTelecom files appeal against FCC net neutrality rules
2015-03-24 09:09:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Industry association USTelecom filed a review petition with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia as a preliminary move to challenging the FCC's new net neutrality rules. The group said it's legal appeal will focus on the FCC's decision to reclassify broadband internet access as a public utility service, allowing stricter regulation of ISPs. The association said it otherwise supports the net neutrality rules, and the rules prohibiting ISPs from blocking or throttling specific internet traffic will not be the focus of its appeal. USTelecom said the FCC could have implemented these rules relying on other legislation, such as Section 706 of the Communications Act, rather than starting a stricter regulatory regime under Title II of the Telecommunications Act.
