Salix Pharmaceuticals Ltd., based in Raleigh, N.C., said Friday it will scrap a planned merger with the subsidiary of an Italian drugmaker due to a changed "political environment" that creates uncertainty about the deal's benefits.

More than 2.4 million people have signed letters calling on the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to stop its proposed "takeover" of the Internet in an effort by conservative activist group American Commitment to reframe the debate about the agency's proposed net neutrality rules. American Commitment's letters and petition page do not refer directly to net neutrality, however.

The House Ethics Committee announced on Tuesday it will continue to investigate whether Rep. Tom Petri, R-Wis., used his position in Congress to help certain companies in which he held significant financial interest. Petri is retiring at the end of the 113th Congress, at which time the committee's purview to probe his alleged misconduct will expire.

(Telecompaper) The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed to modify its Part 15 rules to accommodate growing demand and encourage innovation in the provision of wireless broadband data services. The Commission's Part 15 rules permit devices to operate on unused "white space" spectrum between TV stations. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking fulfils the Commission's commitment in the Incentive Auction Report and Order to consider changes to its existing Part 15 rules to facilitate unlicensed use of the television bands, 600 MHz Band guard band and channel 37.
