Asus ZenWatch 2 to reach Europe in October

(Telecompaper) Asus announced at the IFA show in Berlin that its ZenWatch 2 will launch in Europe in October starting at EUR 149. First announced in June, Asus's second smartwatch adds an optional 18-mm band to the original Zenwatch and a choice of three stainless-steel case colours, 18 different strap material and colour combinations and over 50 different watch faces. Users can also design their own watch face with the accompanying FaceDesigner smartphone app. The watch runs Android Wear and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection against scratches and damage. When synced with an Android or iOS smartphone, the ZenWatch 2 supports a range of notifications, using included apps such as Asus ZenUI, Business Helper, FoneHelper, Remote Camera and ZenWatch Message. Asus said it also improved the battery on the new model, promising up to two days of use on a single charge. In addition, the watch also comes with a redesigned Wellness smartphone app, built-in pedometer and workout coaching feature to track fitness activities.

Asus grows smartphone shipments to 5 mln in Q2

(Telecompaper) Asus reported second-quarter sales of TWD 99.37 billion, up 4 percent from a year earlier but 3 percent versus Q1. Operating profit rose 7 percent year-on-year to TWD 4.72 billion, while net profit was down 3 percent from a year ago to TWD 4.66 billion. Asus shipped a total 4.8 million computers in the quarter, down from 5.4 million in Q1, while mobile device shipments increased over the same period to 6.0 million units from 4.5 million. The mobile growth came mainly from smartphones, which increased to 5.0 million units from 3.0 million in Q1. Computers still accounted for 61 percent of revenue, and mobile devices were good for 22 percent; Asus aims to reverse this and generate a majority of sales from mobile by 2018. For the third quarter, Asus targets growth in both product categories, to 5.4 million computers and 7.8 million mobile devices.
