TIM offices raided in expanded antitrust probe into broadband rollout

(Telecompaper) Italy's antitrust and competition authority, AGCM, has announced the expansion of an investigation launched last summer into possible abuse by Telecom Italia (TIM) in the expansion of its fibre-optic broadband network to underserved and rural areas across the country. The watchdog said it's now probing whether TIM had tried to set wholesale prices for operators seeking broadband access that might obstruct competition. In a statement, the AGCM also said it's looking into possible anti-competitive behaviour by TIM on the retail broadband market via the use of privileged information it had obtained as the dominant network operator.

AT&T to start roll-out of mobile 5G in Dallas, Atlanta, Waco this year

(Telecompaper) AT&T has said it will be aggressively pushing 5G deployment this year and beyond with the introduction of mobile 5G in many cities, extending its 5G Evolution to more cities and expanding the virtualisation of its network. To help meet its goals, it will be opening a new 5G test lab in Austin, Texas. Mobile 5G will be launched by the end of this year in a dozen cities, including part of Dallas, Atlanta and Waco, Texas. It will also add more 5G capable mobile devices and smartphones to its lineup from early 2019.

TalkTalk cuts dividend to fund UK full-fibre roll-out

(Telecompaper) TalkTalk confirmed that it was in talks to provide a full-fibre roll-out across the UK, potentially providing full fibre to more than 3 million homes and businesses in medium-sized towns and cities. The announcement was made as TalkTalk issued a trading update for its third quarter to 31 December, with on-network net additions reaching 37,000 in the quarter. The company has increased its net addition forecast for the full year to 150,00-160,000.
