Baidu starts testing driverless car on public roads in China

(Telecompaper) Chinese search engine Baidu plans to mass produce a driverless car in five years. Baidu is currently testing its model on public roads in Beijing and in Wuhu, in Anhui province, as well as in a closed testing area in Shanghai. Baidu plans to test its car in 10 cities across China to experience different weather, road and traffic conditions, The WSJ reports, citing Baidu senior VP Wang Jing. Wang said 93 percent of accidents in China are currently caused by human error, and Baidu is open to cooperation with ride-sharing companies. Wang also said that the first batch of self-driving cars will still have steering wheelseven though they don't really have too for people who want to "drive for fun".
