Spectrum licensed to U.S. wireless carriers generates more than $400 billion annually in economic activity, according to a report issued by the Brattle Group and prepared for CTIA. The $400 billion figure includes direct and indirect economic impact generated by the mobile carriers, but excludes billions more in economic benefits produced by mobile health, mobile education, the app economy and other sectors that use licensed spectrum as a platform for their own business models, according to the repor.
U.S. economy tepid in early second quarter, but jobs market resilient

The U.S. economy was on a modest growth path early in the second quarter with home resales falling in April and manufacturing activity on the backfoot in May, although the labor market continued to tighten. Growth is struggling to rebound strongly after slumping at the start of the year, weighed down by bad weather, a strong dollar, port disruptions and deep energy spending cuts.

Energy, chemical contractor to close Freeport operations, cut hundreds of jobs

TIC Energy & Chemical Inc., a processing and industrial contractor division of Colorado-based TIC, plans to close its operations in Freeport, affecting 500 employees, according to a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission . The company informed its employees on May 7, and the TWC received TIC Energy & Chemical's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter on May 14. Tom Janssen, a spokesman for the company, said in an email the move is a "business decision to shift our operations away from maintenance, testing and small capital construction services and nothing to do with oil market."
