N Lagoon Avenue Green Street Planter Project Update: May 22, 2015

Environmental Services uses green streets throughout the city to help manage stormwater and protect water quality in our rivers and streams. This project will pilot planter designs meant to manage stormwater runoff from the public right-of-way in areas with surrounding industrial uses. Green streets also add green space to neighborhoods.

Corn planter down-force systems tested

In a low-stress year, farmer trials show modest yield gains from automatic systems. In 2014, the Boettgers, who farm 3,000 acres near Harlan in southwestern Iowa, decided to harness technology to help solve their planter down-pressure challenge. They outfitted half their 16-row Kinze 3600 planter with an Ag Leader hydraulic down-force system, which automatically senses down force and adjusts it in one second. read more

Multi-hybrid corn planter trials

This new planter technology could change how breeders develop corn hybrids and soybean varieties. Fields across the Midwest will begin sporting a new look in 2015 as farmers begin using variable-rate, multi-cultivar planters, which are available commercially for the first time after being field tested in 2014 by Kinze Manufacturing and Precision Planting, in conjunction with four seed companies. read more

Kinze Continues Progress on World's First Electric Multi-Hybrid Planter

Planter Adjustments for Dry Soil

By Mark Hanna, Iowa State University Many planters allow seed depth to be adjusted 3-4 in. Actual depth should be checked, however, to ensure penetration of seed openers and accurate seed placement. Row cleaners may be used as an aid for deeper planting, but subsequent rainfall can create soil sealing or erosion. Greater down pressure than normal may aid seed-to-soil contact. read more
