(Telecompaper) The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has asked the government to drop the bill seeking to impose communication services tax (CST) on charges payable by consumers at the rate of 9 percent, reports CommunicationsWeek. ATCON said this would be another burden when on a subscriber base of 173 million. VAT at 5 percent already applies to voice, SMS and data services.

(Telecompaper) US officials are seeking to block an undersea cable backed by Google, Facebook and a Chinese partner in a national-security review, people involved in the discussions told the Wall Street Journal. The Justice Department, which leads a multiagency panel that reviews telecommunications matters, has signaled opposition to the project because of concerns over its Chinese investor, Beijing-based Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group Co, and the direct link to Hong Kong the cable would provide, the report said.

(Telecompaper) Kenya's communication and financial sector regulators have warned against parliament's quest to split mobile money transfer services off from telecoms operators, Business Daily reported. The Ministry of ICT, Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) on 10 July asked lawmakers to be cautious in their effort to de-link services such as M-Pesa, Airtel Money and T-Kash from their parent mobile telecommunication firms.
