Giant Eagle decides it's Good Cents to shut down its discount grocery chain

O'Hara-based Giant Eagle, Inc., the region's dominant grocer, is shutting down its Good Cents Grocery + More chain, a discount-oriented grocery business it opened in the wake of Bottom Dollar entering the Pittsburgh market. The company will close all eight Good Cents stores it opened in western Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio.

Giant Eagle will be closing all eight of its Good Cents + More stores, the O'Hara grocer's entry into the limited assortment discount grocery category dominated by players like Aldi and Save-A-Lot. Four of the locations -- including one on McKnight Road in Ross, plus sites in Erie, West Erie and Johnstown -- are in Pennsylvania.

Potash Corporation raises quarterly dividend 9% to 38 cents US a share

Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. announced a nine per cent increase in its quarterly dividend Wednesday, a day before the fertilizer giant releases its fourth-quarter and year-end results. Saskatoon-based PotashCorp said the dividend, announced after markets closed, will rise three cents to 38 cents US per share, payable May 4 to shareholders of record on April 13. "With our potash expansion program nearing completion, our board and management team continue to review our future cash flow potential and the best opportunities to provide superior returns to our shareholders," president and CEO Jochen Tilk said in a release announcing the increase.
