General Motors has reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission on the federal agencys investigation into two dealers marketing used vehicles as safe to drive despite not completing recall repairs on the vehicles. GM and the dealer groups Jim Koons Management and Lithia Motors Inc., independently agreed to stop marketing used vehicles involved with vehicles in the ignition-switch defect scandal and vehicle recalls. General Motors Co and two dealership companies, Jim Koons Management and Lithia Motors Inc, will settle allegations they advertised that they sold carefully inspected cars that in fact had unrepaired safety recalls, the Federal Trade Commission said on Thursday. The FTC's allegations were that GM said its "certified pre-owned vehicles" had a 172-point inspection but failed to disclose that no one had repaired such critical issues as an ignition switch defect that can affect engine power, steering, braking and airbag deployment.

Merck pays $830 M to settle class-action case over Vioxx

Merck will pay $830 million to resolve a federal class-action lawsuit involving shareholders and the painkiller Vioxx, which the drugmaker pulled from the market years ago over safety concerns. Merck said Friday that the case involved people who purchased its securities between 1999 and 2004.
