You and SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research With your work at SRON, you will analyze the performance of the innovative instrument payload of the European CO2 Monitoring CO2M mission in perspective of its overall science objectives. SRON has a leading role in advising ESA regarding the scientific targets of the mission and develops operational data processing algorithms of CO2M for the European operational satellite agency EUMETSAT. Your position and team You will be part of our team of 8 scientists working on trace gas retrieval in the Earth Science Group ESG of SRON. The ESG consists of approximately 25 scientists permanent, postdocs, PhD students that work on the data processing and interpretation of satellite instruments as well as the definition of new instrumentation and guiding the development. Our team develops algorithms for trace gas remote sensing, for operational data processing and validation and gives scientific guidance during the implementation phase of future missions. Your project You will contribute to the endtoend performance analysis of the CO2M spectrometer and polarimeter instrument. For this purpose, we will simulate radiometric calibrated measurements of the CO2M spectrometer and polarimeter with global and regional data coverage. Performing CO2 accuracy and precision analysis on these data sets will give us inside in the expected mission performance. You will present your results to the project team, our colleges at the agencies and at conferences and in peerreviewed journals. Position requirements We are looking for a person with a PhD in atmospheric physics or similar. Furthermore, a clear asset will be strong programming skills in Python, C and Fortran and experience in atmospheric trace gas and aerosol remote sensing. Good English language skills speaking and writing and the ability to both work in a team and independently are a necessity for us. Our Earth Science Group has a vacancy for a Postdoc fm Vacancy number 1595 Project Outline In October 2017 ESAs Sentinel5 Precursor mission was launched with the TROPOMI instrument as its single payload. TROPOMI is a collaboration between the Netherlands and ESA. SRON is the coPrincipal Investigator Institute and responsible for a.o. the operational algorithms for methane. One of our projects on the use of the TROPOMI methane data is a collaboration with ESA and the Canadian company GHGSat Inc. which operates small satellites measuring methane at facility scale resolution 50 meters for select domains. Within the project we use the daily global methane observations of TROPOMI to guide the GHGSat satellites to potentially interesting localized methane emission sources. These sources include infrastructure in the oil and gas industry, coal mines, and landfills. The aim is to detect large emissions using TROPOMI and subsequently allow localization and identification of the methane leaking facility with GHGSat. We can then quantify these emissions and ultimately support mitigation or fixing the leaks by providing the information to the responsible parties as was done with a huge methane leak from the natural gas industry in central Asia which was then fixed Varon et al., Geophys. The combination of TROPOMI and very high spatial resolution instruments like GHGSat offers a new exciting and unique opportunity for finding and localizing methane emission sources. Reducing methane emissions for example from the oil and gas industry is a means to achieve climate impact on the short term. Tasks The main task of the postdoc is to further develop automated methods for the detection, identification, and quantification of localized CH4 sources using TROPOMI observations. The TROPOMI findings are communicated with the GHGSat team and collaborators at Harvard University, and followed by more indepth scientific study and subsequent publications. Requirements For this exciting project we are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated and result driven scientist with a PhD degree in computer sciencesastrophysicsatmospheric sciences or similar degree, with extensive experience and good skills in data analytics and computer programming. Experience with atmospheric modeling, machine learning, or satellite remote sensing would be an asset. Our Earth Science Group has a vacancy for a Postdoc fm Vacancy number 1509 Project Outline In October 2017 ESAs Sentinel5 Precursor mission was launched with the TROPOMI instrument as its single payload. The TROPOMI instrument combines unprecedented high spatial resolution 3.57 x 7 km2 with daily global coverage measuring various atmospheric species. Results so far already show the huge step forward TROPOMI is making for measuring the atmospheric composition of the troposphere, and the wealth of new information that is obtained. SRON is the Dutch coPrincipal Investigator Institute and responsible a.o. for the operational algorithms for CO and CH4. This project focuses on CH4. More specifically, the TROPOMI CH4 product will be evaluated against CH4 retrievals from a recently launched Japanese satellite named GOSAT2. This satellite performs measurements in multiple CH4 absorption bands, including the spectral band of TROPOMI 2.3m. The comparison is expected to provide insight in possible improvements of both the TROPOMI and GOSAT algorithms. In addition to comparison to GOSAT, also the SRON operational CH4 product will be compared to alternative products from other institutes. The work will be performed in the framework of the ESA Climate Change Initiative project on greenhouse gases. Tasks The main task of the postdoc is to perform the SRON tasks within the ESA CCI greenhouse gas project as described above. In addition, scientific data interpretation of the greenhouse gas products CO2 and CH4 is also envisioned. Requirements For this project we are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated and result driven scientist with a PhD degree in astrophysics or computational sciences, with experience in retrieval of atmospheric trace gases andor radiative transfer modeling, and strong computer programming skills. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Our team and mission The Research Fellow will be based in the Lunar Lander Team of the HRE Development Projects Group. The Lunar Lander Team in the Directorate of Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration supports the initiation and leads the implementation of near to medium term lunar exploration mission studies, technology development and flight projects. Current activities include the development of PROSPECT and PILOT for the Russian led mission Luna27. These activities are defined to generate knowledge, technologies, expertise, capabilities and partnership to prepare for future human lunar exploration whilst creating new opportunities for fundamental scientific research. Fields of activitiesresearch Overview of the field of research proposed A Research Fellow is sought to engage in both independent and supporting research in preparation of future lunar exploration via the PROSPECT package on the Luna27 mission. The Research Fellow will work closely with the lunar lander team, to address important scientific questions that affect the PROSPECT design and performances. This will involve working closely with the members of the PROSPECT User Group PROSPECT science team, members of the PROSPECT industrial consortium, and with colleagues in ESA including the PROSPECT project scientist, to perform multidisciplinary research in support of an optimized PROSPECT mission. The generation of technical notes in support of the PROSPECT development activities and of publications on performed scientific investigations is expected. Right now, were working with AI, cubesat, drone and hyperspectral payload data and VR, but HAPs, quantum technologies and distributed ledgers are on our todo list. lab is part of the ESA Earth Observation Programmes Department developing future systems for earth observation. lab also hosts ESAs InCubed programme, providing rapid funding of innovative public private partnerships to exploit new EO markets. lab also convenes experts from across the World to develop research agendas on the relevance for EO of emerging technology topics including AI, distributed ledgers and quantum computing. lab tests concepts in 13 month Case Studies executed by a multidisciplinary research team that youd be a part of.
