Duke University bags $20M to advance HIV vaccines

Both grants come from the National Institutes of Health; Dr. Mary Klotman , M.D., chair of the Department of Medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine, received a five-year, $9 million grant and Dr. Sallie Permar , assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Duke, received a five-year, $11 million grant. Researchers at researchers at the UNC-Chapel Hill will work with Permar, who won a Triangle Business Journal Health Care Heroes award this year for being a top innovator .

The drugs giant GlaxoSmithKline has taken a step towards what would be the industry's largest-ever initial public offering with the appointment of banks to assess the future of its HIV medicines subsidiary. Sky News has learnt that GSK has hired Citi, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley as financial advisers on ViiV Healthcare, one of the company's fastest-growing units.

Mylan begins marketing HIV treatment

Canonsburg-based generic drug maker Mylan Inc. has begun marketing a medication that is used to treat hepatitis B and the human immunodeficiency virus. Mylan's 100-mg lamivudine tablets are a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline's Epivir-HBV, a medication approved in 1995 by the Food & Drug Administration.
