The Australian share market closed higher for a fourth consecutive day, thanks to gains in resource giants BHP Billiton and Woodside Petroleum, plus retailers Wesfarmers and Woolworths. Macquarie Private Wealth division director Lucinda Chan said it's been "quite a strong week for the market" as investors await the upcoming US earnings season.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia head of debt research Adam Donaldson said the market has steadily weakened as the afternoon progresses, amid a rosier day for Asian equities and the Australian sharemarket. Mr Donaldson said there was also a rapid rebound in oil prices on Friday night, which fed through to a substantial improvement in risk appetite.
