VMware adds more scale to Virtual SAN beta

VMware has posted a new beta release of Virtual SAN (VSAN) that lets enterprises add more storage capacity and management features. Server virtualization is still VMware's bread and butter, but the company has this year expanded its aspirations to include the whole data center, including networks, storage as well as servers.

F5, VMware, and Cisco: One happy family?

At first blush, F5 Networks' new Synthesis Architecture for Software-Defined Application Services might appear to compete with new offerings from Cisco and VMware. But no, F5 CEO John McAdam and executive vice president of Strategic Solutions Manuel Rivelo tell IDG Communications Chief Content Officer John Gallant that F5 is very much in sync with these two data center giants (we did not, however, press them on the relationship between Cisco and VMware).

VMware promises better 3D graphics on virtualized desktops

VMware is hoping to persuade more enterprises to make the leap to virtual desktops by improving graphics capabilities and allowing them to circumvent Microsoft's licensing terms. The company is this week hosting VMworld Europe in Barcelona and desktop virtualization is one of the big themes at the event. Along with its plan to take over the whole data center, including storage and networks, VMware has accelerated its desktop push. This week it acquired desktop-as-a-service company Desktone.

VMware reverses decision on ThinApp licensing, readies new version

ThinApp users have scored a victory as VMware has decided to keep offering it as a separate product and said a new version will arrive soon. ThinApp uses virtualization to encapsulate applications and isolate them from the underlying operating system. Doing that helps eliminate version conflicts and simplify application delivery and management, according to VMware.
