Pennsylvania's attorney general sued one of the nation's largest producers of natural gas on Wednesday over claims it cheated at least 4,000 landowners who signed drilling leases with the company. Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp. tricked landowners into signing one-sided leases in the early years of the Marcellus Shale drilling boom and then improperly deducted certain post-production expenses from their royalty checks, according to the lawsuit filed in Bradford County.

FTC declines to probe whether ads for a dieta products are deceptive

Federal Trade Commission officials have rejected a consumer group's call for an investigation into whether Coca-Cola, Pepsico and other manufacturers have falsely advertised that artificially sweetened soft drinks and food products help people lose weight. The California-based group, U.S. Right to Know , filed citizen petitions in April asking the agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to stop companies from branding products with the word "diet" if they contain an artificial sugar substitute, including those containing aspartame, the most widely used sweetener.

On July 14, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced two settlements with auto dealers over allegedly deceptive advertising practices. The first settlement was reached with a White Plains-based auto dealer that allegedly misled consumers by promoting, in its print and online ads, illusory sale and lease prices by including "discounts or rebates that were not available to most consumers, and thus, did not represent the actual sale or lease prices."

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Hyundai of White Plains will pay $32,500 in penalties and other costs to New York State for deceptive advertising after an investigation by the attorney general's office found that the car dealer used misleading advertising practices in its print and online ads, according to Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman's office. Among its deceptive practices, the dealership promoted sale and lease prices that included discounts or rebates that were not available to most customers, which did not represent the actual sale or lease prices.
