3 win Nobel Prize for super-zoom microscopes
2014-10-08 18:56:41| Biotech - Topix.net
Two Americans and a German scientist won the Nobel Prize in chemistry Wednesday for finding ways to make microscopes more powerful than previously thought possible, allowing scientists to see how diseases develop inside the tiniest cells. Working independently of each other, U.S. researchers Eric Betzig and William Moerner and Stefan Hell of Germany shattered previous limits on the resolution of optical microscopes by using glowing molecules to peer inside tiny components of life.

New York Times: Three physicists have been awarded the Nobel Prize for revolutionizing the way the world is lighted. The 2014 physics award went to Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano of Japan and Shuji Nakamura of the University of California, Santa Barbara, for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes, which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources. The three scientists, working together and separately, found a way to produce blue light beams from semiconductors in the early 1990s....
