Tropical birds develop 'superfast' wing muscles for mating, not flying

2016-04-12 12:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld

[NEWS] Studies in a group of tropical birds have revealed one of the fastest limb muscles on record for any animal with a backbone. The muscle, which can move the wing at more than twice the speeds required for flying, has evolved in association with extravagant courtship displays that involve rapid limb movements, according to a paper to be published in the journal eLife. The 'superfast' wing movements of male red-capped and golden-crowned manakins are un…

FAA Updates Standards, Tower Designs to save birds' lives.

2016-03-25 13:31:09| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

Changes made by FAA to its communication tower lighting standards were undertaken to save thousands of birds' lives each year. Tower lighting configurations for tall structures, used to warn pilots when approaching obstruction, include white and red steady-burning, flashing, and strobe lights as well as various combinations of all 3 types. Updated in December 2015, Advisory Circular (AC) for obstruction marking and lighting dictates tower lighting schemes should follow revised guidance.

Nuclear accidents make mutant bugs and birds

2016-03-11 02:53:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Deutsche-Welle: Biologist Timothy Mousseau has spent years collecting mutant bugs, birds and mice around Chernobyl and Fukushima. In a DW interview, he shares some surprising insights into the effects of nuclear accidents on wildlife. DW: Professor Timothy Mousseau, did you collect these mutant firebugs [pictured at the top of the page]? Timothy Mousseau: Yes, the firebugs are really an eye-opener. My research partner Anders Moller and I were visiting Chernobyl on April 26, 2011. We were wandering around Pripyat...

Controversy as RSPB builds 100m wind turbine despite deadly threat to birds

2016-02-29 01:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Telegraph: The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has completed construction of a 100 metre wind turbine at its headquarters despite warnings they are a deadly danger to some birds and bats. The turbine will save an estimated 800 tonnes of carbon emissions a year as it generates the equivalent of half the electricity the RSPB uses across its 127 sites. Critics of the technology warn turbines pose a threat to birds, particularly rare species which are already suffering from low numbers or migratory...

Study suggests that longer-distance migratory birds may be smarter

2016-02-24 13:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld

[NEWS] Birds that migrate the greatest distances have more new neurons in the regions of the brain responsible for navigation and spatial orientation, suggests a new paper published in Scientific Reports. For some time scholars have widely accepted the view that neurons, the cells that specialise in processing and transmitting information and contribute to brain plasticity, continue to be generated in the brains of animals even when they are adults. After being create…
