Samsung Draws a Big 'Meh' for Clunky, Pricey Galaxy Gear Smartwatch

Samsung on Wednesday showed off its much-anticipated Galaxy Gear smartwatch at the IFA consumer show in Berlin. The device serves as an ancillary to a user's Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, both also unveiled at IFA on Wednesday. Both these devices run Android 4.3, which support the Bluetooth Low Energy standard. Priced at $300, the Galaxy Gear will be available in the U.S. in October.

Samsung introduces Galaxy Note 10.1

(Telecompaper) Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) at technology trade show IFA in Berlin. The new device comes in a new leather-effect rear casing edged with stitching and offers multitasking features as well as new uses for the S Pen stylus. The Galaxy Note 10.1 comes equipped with an eight-core chip, 3GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 2,560x1,600-pixel screen resolution, a 8,220mAh battery, 802.11ac, Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth 4.0. The 3G and Wi-Fi versions of the Note 10.1 will feature a 1.9GHz octa-core chip and the 4G version will feature a 2.3GHz quad-core chip. The S Pen 2.0 that comes with the Galaxy Note 10.1 offers a new Air Command wheel feature that contains shortcuts to applications and appears on the screen when a user pulls out the stylus or hovers the tip over the screen and presses the button on the side. In a handwritten memo, users can also call a written-down phone number, visit a URL or find a location on a map by drawing a box around the text and hitting the corresponding icon. Also on the Air Command wheel is the new Scrapbook app for saving snippets of text, pictures, web pages and other content. The new tablet offers a Multi Window feature that divides the screen in half between two apps and also allows users to drag and drop content between the two applications or call up apps in a corner and send them back until needed. The new device will be available in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB models.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Note 3 at IFA 2013

(Telecompaper) Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 at technology trade show IFA in Berlin. The Note 3 will launch across US carriers AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular and T-Mobile and on 25 September in more than 140 countries. The new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is set in a textured, leather-edge in fake stitching and features a 5.7-inch full HD screen, a 2.3GHz processor, 3GB of RAM, a 3,200mAh battery, a 13-megapixel camera with LED flash, LTE connectivity, measures 8.3mm and weighs 168g. The Note 3 expands upon the S Pen stylus' capabilities by launching an Air Command wheel on the screen once the S Pen is taken out of the holder. It also enables users to engage apps by drawing the dimensions of floating onscreen apps. The onscreen wheel menu includes icons that offer shortcuts to applications that use the stylus, including the calculator, phone dialler and the YouTube app. With the Note's S Finder, users can search their device's archives for files, music and photos by name, date and tags as well as search among handwritten notes. The Samsung Note 3 comes with a Multi Window feature that allows consumers to divide the screen in half between two apps and also drag and drop content between them. In addition, Multi Window allows users to call up additional apps to float over their main app and push it aside to be used in the future.
