Broadband access in W.Va. lags behind FCC benchmarks

FCC: More than one-third of Alabamians lack broadband

A new report by the Federal Communications Commission says almost 35 percent of the state's residents don't have the high-speed service needed for today's digital offerings. That means nearly 1.7 million people statewide lack a fixed broadband connection.

FCC raises broadband definition to 25Mbps, Chairman mocks ISPs

The FCC voted to greatly increase its definition of broadband service, from the previous definition of 4Mbit down and 1Mbit up to the new standard of 25Mbps down and 3Mbps up. According to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, this move reflects the tremendous growth in consumer data consumption, the growing popularity of services like Netflix, and the need to create a future-proof standard that won't be obviated in a handful of years.

FCC redefines advanced broadband as 25 Mbps; Republicans blow a gasket

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has redefined advanced broadband as having 25Mbps download speeds, up from 4Mbps, giving the agency new authority to pass rules to encourage deployment across the country. The FCC, in a 3-2 party-line vote Thursday, also determined that this newly-defined advanced broadband wasn't being rolled out in a timely manner across the U.S. The agency released a notice of inquiry asking how it can accelerate broadband deployment, but didn't offer concrete plans on how it will proceed.
