Free unveils new Freebox STB models, launches new broadband plans with Netflix

(Telecompaper) French operator Free has unveiled two new Freebox versions, each available with new broadband plans that include Netflix Essentiel within the monthly subscription. The premium model, named Freebox Delta, will be available for purchase as part of a triple-play bundle priced EUR 49.99/month, while the cheaper version, Freebox One, will cost EUR 39.99/month, with no minimum contract for both subscriptions. Free's other three bundles (Revolution, Mini 4K, and Crystal) remain available for new and existing customers.

Italian state lender cited as controller of merged TIM-Open Fiber broadband unit

(Telecompaper) Italian state lender CDP could end up as the controlling shareholder of a new entity combining the fixed broadband network of Telecom Italia (TIM) and Open Fiber, according to unnamed sources cited by Italian daily La Repubblica. TIM had previously announced that it was open to talks with wholesale-only operator Open Fiber about merging their respective fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) assets and has reportedly discussed the idea with CDP and utility giant Enel, the 50 percent shareholders of Open Fiber.

EU needs more, better public funding to meet broadband goals - study

(Telecompaper) Public funding for expanding broadband in the EU is falling short and will not be enough to achieve the goal of fibre for all, according to a report from the think tank Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE). The study found that combined public funding to support broadband deployment in the period to 2020 amounts to around EUR 7 billion per year, and at this rate, it will take Europe nearly 30 years to meet its FTTH targets.
