Energy CEO: Solar should break up with wind, date natural gas, have distributed babies

2013-04-23 15:22:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Grist: I`ve been going to climate and energy conferences for a long time, and I`ll be honest, it`s been a while since I`ve heard anything new. Or, uh, interesting. But I heard just such a thing yesterday at the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit that I`m attending in NYC. (I`m on a panel today at noon Eastern, FYI.) It came from David Crane, the CEO of NRG Energy, one of America`s biggest energy companies, which owns several power subsidiaries and a couple of utilities. Under Crane`s leadership,...

Session 2: Smart Wire Grid on Distributed FACTS (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System)

2013-04-16 18:17:00| Transmission & Distribution World

During this presentation Michael E. Beehler, PE, and Andrija (Ani) Sadikovic discuss Smart Wire Grid Inc. (SWG) introduction and implementation of a unique power flow control method via smart wire technology, which includes SWGs distributed series reactors, sensors, communication protocols and control algorithms Location Online Webinar United States See map: Google Maps Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 2:00pm ET/11:00am PT Smart Wire Grid Inc. (SWG) introduced and implemented a unique power flow control method via smart wire technology, which includes SWG’s distributed series reactors, sensors, communication protocols and control algorithms. Power flow control is applied on each phase by injecting inductance into each line conductor — change in line impedance allows active and reactive power flow control. Depending on the design, each of the distributed series reactors (DSRs) is capable of injecting nominally 50 µH of inductance. The smart wire technology is not only cost beneficial but also fast and easy to implement — it does not require line outage or substation work. Smart wire technology has demonstrated extreme efficiency for the overload protection of transmission facilities, participation in the remedial action schemes/special protection schemes, phase balancing on non-transposed transmission lines, and energy cost reduction in the market. SWG is one of the most respected start-up companies in the energy field. It is highly recognized and supported by the NEETRAC and Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. About the 2013 Advanced Technologies Webinar Series: Welcome to the Advanced Technology Series of webinars by Burns & McDonnell. This year we will feature six progressive transmission line technologies that support the safe, reliable, efficient and compliant operation of HV and EHV transmission lines.  On Demand Sessions you will have access to include: Session 1 - Dynamic Line Rating by Lindsey Manufacturing   Upcoming webinars will include: Session 3 - May- Composite Core Conductors Session 4 - July - CRUX on Micropiles and Steel Pile Caps Session 5 - September- EHV Cable Systems

Distributed Intelligence and Control: Are we heading in the right direction?

2013-04-11 18:56:16| Transmission & Distribution World

There is no real limit to the degree of effective distributed processing and control that can be deployed in a power system. We need to accelerate this deployment. The ideal system has both distributed and overriding central intelligence and control. But we have a long way to go before we reach any sort of theoretical limit. The obstacles are more organizational than technical. Siloed human authority and responsibilities will need to disappear before we can fully explore the advantages of distributed technical assets. We've already gone too far in committing to distributed resources.

Distributed Intelligence and Control: Are we heading in the right direction?
