Duke Energy's CEO is paying a price for a massive spill of collected coal ash that coated 70 miles of a North Carolina river in sludge containing toxic heavy metals. An annual statement released ahead of the Charlotte-based company's May shareholder meeting says Chief Executive Officer Lynn Good's $8.3 million compensation in 2014 was cut by about $600,000.

Duke Energy may use the proceeds to help pay for major capital project in its commercial division or to help fund stock buybacks. Duke Energy expects to close the $2.8 billion sale of its fleet of commercial power plants in the Midwest to Dynegy Inc. on April 2 after gaining approval of the sale by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Friday.

Charlotte-based Duke Energy says it has taken voluntary steps to correct problems at the Sutton Plant and to protect the safety of drinking water in the area. Duke Energy will appeal the $25.1 million fine imposed by N.C. regulators for groundwater contamination at the closed Sutton Plant near Wilmington.
