Cryogenic on-chip quantum electron cooling leads towards computers that consume 10x less power

2014-09-12 18:27:11| Extremetech

Researchers at UT Arlington have created the first electronic device that can cool electrons to -228 degrees Celsius (-375F), without any kind of external cooling. The chip itself remains at room temperature, while a quantum well within the device cools the electrons down cryogenic temperatures. These cryogenic, quantum well-cooled electrons could allow for the creation of electronic devices that consume 10 times less energy than current devices, according to the researchers.

Real-time emotion detection with Google Glass: An awesome, creepy taste of the future of wearable computers

2014-09-04 15:11:15| Extremetech

The wily geniuses at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany have created the world's first real-time emotion detection app for Google Glass. The app (glassware, as Google prefers to call it) can also accurately detect someone's age or gender. Real-time emotion detection could be of great use for people with disorders such as autism, who often struggle to interpret facial expressions, or simply for people who struggle to divine their partner's true emotional state when they say that they're "fine.'

CryptoWall held over half a million computers hostage, encrypted 5 billion files

2014-08-29 15:13:44| InfoWorld: Top News

A file-encrypting ransomware program called CryptoWall infected over 600,000 computer systems in the past six months and held 5 billion files hostage, garnering more than $1 million for its creators , researchers found. The Counter Threat Unit (CTU) at Dell SecureWorks performed an extensive analysis of CryptoWall that involved gathering data from its command-and-control (C&C) servers, tracking its variants and distribution methods and counting payments made by victims so far.
