New sulfur-based battery is safer, cheaper, more powerful than lithium-ion

2013-06-06 15:01:31| Extremetech

Scientists at the DoE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have struck the battery mother lode: They've created an all-solid lithium-sulfur battery that is cheaper, less flammable, and has four times the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Beyond the obvious gains from a four-fold increase in energy density, these sulfur-based batteries could play a key role in electric vehicles and airplanes, where the flammability of lithium-ion batteries is a serious concern.

Mitsubishi has issued a recall of its i-MiEV electric car and Outlander plug-in hybrid crossover in Japan. It comes from a manufacturing plant crisis in March where a glitch caused one of its lithium ion battery packs to melt and another one to catch fire. The battery breakdowns and recalls are a blow for Mitsubishi, which has been counting on plug-ins to rebrand itself as an eco-leader. The company has been focusing on fleet sales in the US to introduce these technologies to the market. The Article Mitsubishi Recalling i-MiEV and Outlander for Battery Problems appeared first on Automotive Digest.
