Intelligent Transportation Expert on What Leaders Think About V2X
2013-05-07 06:43:19| AutomotiveDigest.com - Automotive Industry News
SITUATION: Intelligent transportation is becoming built into automakers strategic planning initiatives through automated technologies, connected cars, and eventually driverless cars. Safety, traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and vehicle emissions are core issues at the heart of it. Everybody joins the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) of America, and automaker executives usually speak as keynoters at conferences. Steven Bayless, Senior Director, Telecommunications and Telematics at ITS America, talked about why a common platform for vehicle communications will provide more opportunity for the industry than individual OEM solutions. All of the passenger and commercial vehicles on the road need to be integrated into the right web of communications. SIGNIFICANCE: Its all about V2X which is the crossroad where Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) services come together. Its communication between drivers, vehicles, road sensors, signage, telematics, and even pedestrians, into one interactive communications network. These days, everyone is focused on connected cars and mobile devices, making sure they work safety and connect to devices drivers are using. Bayless thinks there are a lot more applications that can be supported from an OEM-installed system than could be supported from a mobile device system. Mobile devices are more constrained in terms of capability, the accuracy of GPS, and they are battery-constrained and don't have as much power. Read what this intelligent transportation expert has to say about core issues being address in the ITS America community.
